A Small City That Kept Growing

Auburn is a home rule city in Logan County, and it has grown steadily enough that concrete contractors get calls for new work as well as repairs. The population rose from 1,340 in 2010 to 1,589 in 2020, about 18.6%. The 2020 census counted 638 households and 710 housing units on about 1.8 square miles. The town was first called Federal Grove. Its current name dates from the 1860s and honors Auburn, New York, where several early settlers had lived. It was incorporated in 1865.

Typical Auburn projects

Auburn has older houses near the center and newer ones around the edges, so the calls vary:

  • Concrete Driveways in place of worn concrete or gravel
  • Concrete Patios behind homes that only have a back step
  • Stamped Concrete for patios and front walks on newer houses
  • Sidewalks & Walkways from the drive to the front and back doors
  • Concrete Slabs for sheds and small garages
  • Concrete Repair on cracked steps and sunken walks

On a small lot every square foot counts, so we help size a patio or drive that works without crowding the yard.

South Union and the Shaker legacy

At South Union, where KY 73 meets US 68, stands the former South Union Shaker Village. The Shakers settled there in 1807 and stayed until 1922, and their 40-room Centre Family dwelling of 1824 now holds the Shaker Museum. The Shakers were known for plain, durable building, and that idea suits concrete well: a solid base, the right thickness, joints in the right places and a proper cure. Decorative finishes are optional. Good preparation is not.

Ground and water

Auburn sits at about 640 feet. Clay soils that hold water after heavy rain are common in this part of Kentucky, and a slab on wet clay can settle unevenly. On every Auburn project we:

  • Strip topsoil and organic material
  • Dig out soft spots and replace them with compacted crushed stone
  • Set grades so water flows away from the house and off the slab
  • Use air-entrained concrete outdoors to resist freeze-thaw damage

Patios that get used

A patio that is too small does not get used. A few planning tips:

  • Dining: leave space for the table, chairs pulled out, and a walkway around
  • Grilling: keep the grill away from the house wall and out of the main path
  • Shade: if you plan a pergola later, we can set footings or anchors during the pour
  • Finish: broom for grip, or Stamped Concrete for a stone or brick look

We mark the outline on the ground during the estimate so you can see the size before committing.

Sheds and small garage slabs

A Concrete Slab under a storage shed or small garage keeps the floor dry and level for decades. We set the slab a few inches above the surrounding yard, slope it slightly toward the door, and add a vapor barrier if the building will be enclosed. For a garage, we thicken the edges and set anchor bolts where the wall framing will sit. Tell us the building size before the estimate so the slab fits the kit or plans exactly.

Cracks worth leaving, cracks worth fixing

Hairline shrinkage cracks on a flat slab are mostly cosmetic and can be routed and sealed. A walk panel that has dropped below its neighbors gets cut out and repoured. Steps with chipped noses can be patched if the body of the step is sound. We tell you which fix will last before you pay for any of them.

Auburn Questions

Can you set footings for a future pergola when pouring my patio?

Yes. If you know where posts will go, we can pour footings or set anchors in the slab so the pergola can be added later without cutting concrete.

How do I know if a crack needs repair?

Hairline cracks are common and often cosmetic. Cracks that are widening, uneven on each side or letting water under the slab should be looked at.

Can a small lot fit a two-car driveway?

Often, yes. We measure the lot, setbacks and turning space during the estimate and show you what fits.
