From Courthouse Square to Lake Lots
Scottsville is the county seat of Allen County, and concrete contractors who work here see both an old county town and rural lake country around it. The town grew from a site on Bays Fork settled in 1797 that became a stagecoach station. It was laid out in 1816, established in 1817, incorporated in 1860 and named for Charles Scott, Kentucky's fourth governor. The 2020 census counted 4,299 residents, and the 2024 estimate is 4,574.
More rain than Bowling Green
Scottsville averages about 54 inches of precipitation a year under NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, noticeably more than Bowling Green. It also sits higher, at about 761 feet. The record low is 20 below zero. For concrete, that combination means:
- Drainage first. With that much rain, a slab that holds water will fail early. We slope every surface and check where runoff goes.
- Air entrainment. Freeze-thaw cycles are common in winter. Air-entrained concrete resists surface scaling.
- Sealing. A penetrating sealer slows water absorption and helps protect the surface.
- Curing. We protect fresh concrete from rain in the first hours and from freezing in its first days.
Older homes in town
As an old county seat, Scottsville has many homes with aging concrete. Typical requests:
Front walks and steps. Replacing cracked, uneven walks and rebuilding steps with even risers. Sidewalks & Walkways and steps are often the first thing visitors see.
Driveway repair. Concrete Repair on cracked aprons and settled panels, or full replacement when the slab has failed.
Back patios. A new Concrete Patio behind an older home, often replacing a small stoop.
Barren River Lake properties
The Army Corps of Engineers created Barren River Lake in 1964 by impounding the Barren River behind an earthen dam 146 feet high. The lake covers about 10,100 acres across Allen, Barren and Monroe counties. Properties around the lake and in the rural parts of the county bring different concrete needs:
- Concrete Slabs for boat storage buildings, carports and workshops
- Wide Concrete Driveways with room to back a boat trailer
- Concrete Patios or Stamped Concrete patios for outdoor living
- Walks from the house to a dock path or parking area
Trailer parking pads need extra thickness and a solid base, since a loaded trailer puts concentrated weight on its tongue jack and wheels.
Slopes and rock
Rural Allen County lots can be hilly. On sloped sites we may need to cut into the hill, build up the low side with compacted fill, or step a patio. Where rock is near the surface, we level the subgrade with crushed stone so the slab has even support.
Pads and walks for small businesses
Shop owners in town call for entry walks, ramp access and equipment pads. An entrance walk should let two people pass, with a gentle slope and a level landing at the door. Air-conditioner and generator pads sit a little above grade and dead level so the equipment runs as designed.
A town of business beginnings
The first Turner family store, opened by J. L. Turner and Cal Turner Sr., started here in 1945, and where the company that became Dollar General was founded in 1968. Shops here still need dumpster pads, which take heavy, repeated impact from trucks and need extra thickness and steel.

Scottsville Questions
How thick should a boat trailer pad be?
Thicker than a standard patio, with a well-compacted base. Trailer tongues and wheels put concentrated weight on small areas, so we plan thickness and reinforcement for the load.
Does Scottsville's rain change how you pour?
Yes. We focus on slope, base drainage and timing. We protect fresh concrete from rain and do not pour on a saturated subgrade.
Can you build a patio on a sloped lake lot?
Yes. Depending on the slope, we may cut and fill, add a retaining edge, or step the patio into levels.
