Concrete in a River Town Next to the Park
Brownsville is the county seat of Edmonson County, and concrete contractors here are working in river country. The city sits on the Green River, a tributary of the Ohio, and its boundary runs along the west side of Mammoth Cave National Park, and Houchin Ferry Campground is reached from town. Brownsville was established in 1826, counted 875 residents in 2020 on about 2.6 square miles, and is a certified Kentucky Trail Town.
Low, river-level ground
Brownsville's elevation is about 541 feet, lower than many towns in the region. Glasgow, for comparison, sits at about 750 feet. Lower ground near a river means:
- Wetter soils. Ground near rivers and creeks often holds more moisture. We dig past soft soil and build a thicker compacted stone base where needed.
- Drainage planning. Water needs a path away from slabs and foundations. On flat lots, even a small slope makes a difference.
- Higher placement. For outbuildings, setting the slab a little above the surrounding grade helps keep water out.
We look at each lot's drainage before planning any Concrete Slab, Concrete Driveway or Concrete Patio.
Main Street and older homes
Kentucky Routes 70 and 259 run together through the city as Main Street. KY 70 leads about 20 miles east to Cave City, and KY 259 runs about 12 miles southeast to US 31W. Homes along these roads and in the older part of town often need:
- Sidewalks & Walkways replaced where old walks have cracked or heaved
- New steps with even risers
- Concrete Repair on porches and aprons
- Driveway aprons that meet the road cleanly
Outdoor living in a Trail Town
Being next to the park and the river shapes how people use their property. Many owners keep kayaks, bikes, camping gear or boats. Useful concrete projects:
- A Concrete Slab for a gear shed or boat storage building
- A wide Concrete Driveway with space to park a trailer
- A Concrete Patio or Stamped Concrete patio for evenings outside
- A rinse-off pad near the back door with a slight slope to drain mud and water
For gear and boat storage, we set the slab slightly above grade and slope it toward the door.
Freeze-thaw near the river
Moist ground and winter freezes can be hard on concrete. Water soaks into the surface, freezes and expands. Air-entrained concrete, good curing and a penetrating sealer after the slab cures all help resist that damage. If an older slab is already flaking, a surface repair can help if the concrete underneath is sound.
Gravel to concrete
Many homes in and around Brownsville still have gravel drives. Gravel near a river washes out and ruts in wet weather. Converting the section nearest the house to a Concrete Driveway gives a clean, solid surface where you park and walk. We remove the loose stone, regrade, add a compacted base and pour, leaving a solid edge where concrete meets the remaining gravel.
Steps for older homes
Older homes along Main Street often have concrete steps that have settled or pulled away from the porch. We rebuild them with even risers, deep treads and a broom finish, and pin them to the foundation where possible so they stay put.
